    'On this machine only' (MSO 2003)

    Most of the time (I really think "all the time" but I'm not POSITIVE), if I create a rule, it adds, all by itself, "On this machine only". This is great, but the rules don't run until I turn it off.

    I found this to be an issue when I would copy rules (export / import), but how come it tries to set this automatically without "asking"?

    Is this something i can "fix"

    Regards,

    First read this Slipstick page.

    To perhaps over-simplify, Rules will be set as Client-side when they require the Outlook client to be open, usually because the Rule refers to client side data such as in a PST. I think you are limited by this constraint in what behavior you can change.

    You can run any selected rules in 2003 by clicking the "Run Rules Now ..." button in the Rules and Alerts dialog.

    No, that's what first alerted me to the problem...

    If I have rules marked "this machine only", they are NOT showing up on the "Run Now" list, but DO as soon as I turn that off.

    How are you creating rules that include this option?

    (1) Rules and Alerts dialog, starting with a blank rule;
    (2) Rules and Alerts dialog, starting with a rule template;
    (3) Create Rule... dialog (e.g., right-clicking message in the Inbox);
    (4) Other

    With (1) or (2), I do not see that box being checked by default. With the others, I don't have much experience.

    Most of my rules I create with "1" -- (AAMOF, when Outlook does it "helpfully" using the "From: ..." They often don't work, and I have to re-do them);

    "2" I have little (no) experience using;

    "3" is how I *often* start my rules, but then select "Advanced Options"... And then clearing the "From People on Distribution list" as *this* is one thing that has NEVER been correct when I chose (let go) it;

    Also, when i import rules, they *always* have the "on this machine only" selected -- and they ain't talking about "this" machine when they say "this"... 'cause I have to go through and turn them ALL off, or they don't appear on the "Run Now" listing.

    I don't Import rules. Perhaps someone who does this knows why it happens or how to prevent it.

    That's OK, it's only a part of the deal anyway...
