    File Used By (2000)

I have a server that has sceduled tasks which open Excel files. Occassionally a scheduled task will misbehave and will lock other users out of the file. In other words the file is being used by the server, do you want to open in read only, notify or cancel.

Other than rebooting the server is there a way to release the file?

    Thanks,
    John

This is an operating system question rather than an Excel question. Which version of Windows is running on the server?

You can close the file on the server, but I don't have a Windows 2000 system to play with any more and I can't remember how we used to do it!

On Windows XP you use Computer Management > Shared Folders > Open Files to do this.

    Edited to add
Try typing NET FILES in a command window. Note the ID of the offending file, then NET FILES xxx /CLOSE

    Stuart,

Unfortunately the file does not appear in the list after typing NET FILES. I get the error message about "file locked by server" when I try to open the file with Exce.

    Regards,
    John

Yes, I found it quite interesting that it did not show up.

    Stuart,

You can use the Computer Management console on Win2k also.

    Re: File Used By (2000)

I was able to see the Excel process running (having the hold of the file) through "Terminal Services Manager". I just selected the appropriate server and then viewed the processes that were running. From there I was able to right-click on the process and end it.
