Formatting toolbar and Task Pane (Word XP)

Attached is a document that contains a copy of Word's Formatting Toolbar. When the "Styles and Formatting" task pane is displayed, Word crashes on closing the document.
I would appreciate it if someone can open the attached document (which displays the task pane and toolbar) and then close it. You don't need to save any changes. Does it crash Word?

I can open and close the document repeatedly without problems (I do enable macros, so the Auto_Open macro is executed). I'm using Word 2002 SP-3.

I'd try the troubleshooting steps outlined in Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> to see if you can find the cause.

Doesn't crash here, either. And I can't imagine that the AutoOpen macro could make it crash on closing, anyway.

Do you have some other AutoClose stuff in Normal.dot or some template? Does it happen when you start Word with the /a or the /safe switch?

I tried it on my Word 2003 machine and it didn't cause a crash here - as I said, this problem only bit me at one client site and (fortunately) I haven't been able to reproduce it since then.

I seem to remember it being related to the attached template. Do you still get the problem when the template is detached (as per your sample file)?

Yes it crashes even when I detach the template and have no templates in the startup folder. I now think it could be an environment problem (probably a DLL). Perhaps one of our other applications causes it.

By process of elmination, I found that the "OUTDENT" button on the formatting toolbar was the culprit. I removed all the other buttons one by one and this was the one that caused Word to crash when the Styles and Formatting pane is open.

I assume you meant the 'Increase Indent' or the 'Left Align' button. If the Left Indent is the problem button then perhaps you may need to live without it. If the Left Align button is the problem then perhaps this may not be the same problem button if the cursor is sitting in a differently aligned paragraph at the time. I say this because the the Left Align button is highlighted to show that the current paragraph alignment - perhaps this is a factor.

Interestingly, when I have seen the problem in the past, the attached template did not include a toolbar with any alignment or indent buttons.

I was confused about which button was the culprit because I noticed when comparing the PM for this reply to the text that shows on screen that the "OUTENT" button was originally entered as 'Left Indent" (and I don't know what Outent buttons look like or do)

Re: Formatting toolbar and Task Pane (Word XP)

Sorry to confuse you. I call it the "LEFT INDENT" button, but after searching the lounge, the correct title is the "OUTDENT" button. The tooltop of the button says "Decrease Indent" button. I have attached the problem document in case anyone has the problem in future.

Perhaps this is a different problem to the one you were experiencing, but it is interesting that it only occurs when the Styles and Formatting task pane is open.......Thanks for your help. I will look at removing this button from all custom toolbars - until the problem is solved.
