Doesn't seem a good idea to me. To make a sound play automatically when an e-mail is opened probably requires scripting, and most anti-virus programs nowadays disable scripting in e-mails, or will even block the e-mail.
Please remove me from this user's address book! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
But seriously, I think there have been posts in the past on how to do this in an HTML message, similar to the way it is done on web pages, which I believe involves setting a "background sound" attribute somewhere. The thread might have been on the Outlook Express board; it has been a while... If that doesn't work, then as HansV notes, security restrictions are likely to block any other method of playing a sound file.
Turns out Microsoft has an article on the web on the subject:

I finally got it to work, after Word shut down repeatedly. My user is happy - me: could not pay me to use this!
Anyway, thanks a lot for your and Hans' help.
