1.txt

I have a couple of users that have received strange e-mails:

The from is their own name at an unknown domain
There is a 1.txt attachment
The subject is 1
The content of the email is 1
I cannot find anything on McAfee's website about it.
Do we need to worry about a virus?

Thanks for any information

It could be a defective viral message, or a spam probe. As long as they are not being sent out from your own organzation, you probably should have your users ignore them.

What is a spam probe?

By "spam probe" I mean a message sent to determine or confirm the validity of an email address. It's possible that I've completely made up the name.

I thought it was one of your specialist culinary instruments, to determine when the meat's cooked.

Have you looked at the email headers (detail) to see if there are any IP address clues that you could do a Whois on to learn more?

No, the users had deleted the email by the time I got back to them. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Thanks for the explanation - even the culinary one.
