    Word 2002 Ruler Problem

    I currently am having a problem with the Word rulers. They come up with an unusual scaling - they are not inches (although that is the system default in Tools/Options) nor centimeters. Perhaps it is cubits? Any suggestions? I have already reinstalled Word 2002 (Yuk!).

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Word 2002 Ruler Problem

    I am having this same problem. The rulers show 2,4,6,8 etc., the default tab stops is set at 4.61 ch, paragraph indentation settings are 0 ch, and spacing before and after are set at 0 line. Although language is U.S. English and measurements is properly set to inches, this measurement type cannot be modified and won't change. I'm using the Developer version, and I've recreated Normal.dot and resorted to the Detect and Repair operation with no success.

    Someone reported it months ago and no one can seem to repro it. Did you upgrade also?

    Re: Word 2002 Ruler Problem

    I upgraded from Office 2000 Developer (Win98) and have never used any measurement other than inches. I've spent the last half hour submitting a support request to Microsoft and will advise if they give me a solution.

    Finally found a KB for the problem:

    Re: Word 2002 Ruler Problem

    The Knowledge Base page seems to have moved or is unavailable today. Here is the fix from Microsoft that worked well:

    1. Quit Microsoft Word, and be careful while editing the registry.
    2. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
    3. In the Run dialog box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
    4. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0WordDa taSettings

    5. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, click the Settings value entry.
    6. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion. Close the Registry Editor.
    7. Start Microsoft Word.
    8. Some of your options under Tools/Options will have changed

    use Joy's steps, the KB is either not working or they haven't updated it that article yet.

    Re: Word 2002 Ruler Problem

    The fix has been updated since this thread was initially posted. The registry hack directions are still available in the Knowledge Base article (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q299/3/39.asp>Q299339 WD2002: You Cannot Change Ruler Measurement Unit from Character Units After Upgrade to Office XP</A>), but there's an easier (and safer!) way to do it listed there now too:

    Method 1: Turn character units off from Visual Basic Editor
    - In Word, press ALT+F11 to run the Visual Basic Editor.
    - On the View menu, click Immediate Window.
    - In the Immediate Window, type the following command
    Options.UseCharacterUnit=False
    - and then press Enter.

    It worked for me and took 5 seconds!

    Fabulous! I just upgraded from Word 2000 to Word 2003 and was having this problem. I searched the Word forum and found this 3-year-old fix, and it still works. Thanks.

    Re: Word 2002 Ruler Problem

    My company has just now switched from Word 2000 to Word 2003 and this problem is popping up here and there for many users. Applying the solution from the KB article appears to work. However, there are some users who have called back because the problem reappears. I can't tell from the KB article if the solution is supposed to kill this problem permanently, or can something else come along to trigger it again.

    Anyone else experience this?

    (Our setups are inconsistent, but for the most part everyone has a Dell Desktop, P4 running Win2K and Office 2K3. All service packs/hotfixes have been applied.)

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

    This problem seems to be a fluke - it can reappear without apparent reason. Fortunately, it takes only a few seconds to execute the VBA instruction

    Options.UseCharacterUnit=False
