BTW, you can control the text for plain text mail. tools > options > mail format > stationery fonts. change the last font to the one you alike. all plain text mail will display using it.

Mary, thanks a million! No I hadn't realized this feature existed -- and of course it's the very thing I was looking for. Thanks to your help I now display plain text messages in 10 pt. Arial. Problem solved!

It's good to see Outlook removes extra line breaks in plain text messages.

In answer to your other question, it was a clean install (as recommended by Woody) and the version was English (International, istr.)

Outlook / Word as editor / Autoformat (XP)

One of my favorite features seems to have gone AWOL.

Previous versions of Outlook, with Word set as email editor, allowed automatic formatting of plain text messages (and newsletters). This made them much easier to read (Arial rather than plain old Courier) and even created sensible styles for what it thought should be headers.

Has this feature really disappeared? I can
