    CD-ROMs and CD-RWs

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

Are CD-ROMs and CD-RWs obsolete now that we have DVD-RWs that can hold a lot more than a CD-ROM?

I am in the mood to go out there and scout for some components and build me a new PC. I think I will forgo a CD-ROM and a CD-RW and just have a DVD for reading/playback and a DVD-RW for writing and backups and things like that.

    Am I crazy, or do I need a CD-xxx for backward compatibility issues? <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30>

    Thanks for any insight

It depends if you are going to be sharing with other PCs. Remember, there are still lots of PCs with only a CD device on it. You may want to check into a combo device that will handle DVDs & CDs.

But don't DVD drives read and write to CD-ROM media?

This is the real issue that I am asking about. Sorry if I was not clearer in my earlier message.

I believe that's correct Wassim. I've been making upgrade enquiries myself recently. One bit of advice was to go for dual layer DVD capability. I personally went for the latest LiteOn DVD+/-R DL, costing about AU$85. They're so cheap now, with DVD R blanks at under AU$1 a piece.

Some DVD burners can NOT burn a CD.

Wow!!! I imagine these are older models, manufactured more than a year ago?

Or are you talking about recently released models? Would you give us some more information to avoid these brands or models.

This is the main point why I am now thinking of upgrading. Computer components are readily avialiable these days one can go out on a shopping spree and find all they need. In the old days you needed to wait for stuff to get to the stores.

    Re: CD-ROMs and CD-RWs

The ones I have seen were of the older ventiage, but it was in the REAL fine print that CDs could not be burnt.

It was JUST a heads up, to READ the fine print on these cheaper models and/or finds.

I am eyeing a Lacie model, which is like all-in-one. Dual Layer, all formats, +R, -R and all that happy jazz.

Its always great advise given here in the Lounge.
