Program to convert FAT32 to NTFS?

I'm wanting to convert an existing Windows XP Home FAT32 system to NTFS. I've tried running C:> CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs in a command prompt which should have worked by I get an error (already posted the details in the XP Forum). And, I tried using Partition Magic 8.0 Trial version but that feature isn't allowed it seems. When I tried to use that feature I got an error saying C: drive couldn't be batched?? So, I'm looking for a free utility that will allow me to do this task. BTW, Acronis Partition Expert doesn't have that ability, unfortunately.

Re: Program to convert FAT32 to NTFS?

    John,

My apologies as I am really inept at this point, having stayed up until 3:00 am. this morning working on this beast of a machine. Evidently my lack of sleep has taken its toll. . I just tried using the command prompt again and it worked without a hitch. I had to reboot and the conversion process is now taking place. What the result will be is another matter. hehe I'll report back after its completed. Again, please accept my apology for my silly error; probably in typing the command line.

Re: Program to convert FAT32 to NTFS?

I would use what Microsoft has provided as if truly thankful! Why should anyone else want to rewrite their code for something so rarely used?

But as been pointed out in another thread by Bob = <!profile=Viking33>Viking33<!/profile>, you may be typing in the "command prompt" into the command line!

    Windows writes:
C:> or somesuch other directory prompt

    You type:
    convert c: /fs:ntfs

    Check
    convert /?
if you get any "no, I'm not going to do it" messages from the previous command...

I'm glad CONVERT is now working as designed! Errors are made because computing is not intuitive!!

I'm not familiar with Acronis Partition Expert, but Acronis Disk Director Suite has the ability to convert a partition from Fat32 to NTFS.

Re: Program to convert FAT32 to NTFS?

    Charlotte,

Partition Expert was released as a stand alone application before Acronis combined some of its other utility apps into the Disk Director Suite. Perhaps the partitioning utility in that suite is an updated version of Partition Expert and thus the ability to convert from FAT32 to NTFS is available.

    Charlotte,

This is what Acronis has to say about its "Disk Director Suite 9.0" and the ability to convert from FAT32 to NTFS:

We regret to inform you that current version of Acronis Disk Director Suite 9.0 doesn't allow you to convert FAT32 into NTFS. Currently, the workaround is to use standard Windows means (Disk Management) to perform this convertion. We expect this feature to be implemented in future versions.

    Thank you.

One other person was under the impression that it could be done and suggested to do this:

Select your FAT32 partition.
Menu Disk -> Advanced --> Change type. In the new window select:
    7h NTFS,HPFS

    To which, Acronis replied:

Please note that the way you proposed changes only the identificator of the file system. It doesn't change the file system itself. For example, all the restrictions of FAT32 partition remain, for example, you won't be able to create a file larger than 4Gb on the partition.

    Thank you.

Well, then I won't try it! I only have one Fat32 partition anyhow, and it is merely for small images, not really an active partition. It is a bit confusing why they make it appear that the app can do this when it can't.

I used the builtin XP "Disk Management" utility to do the conversion and it worked just fine, if that is of any consolation to you?
