Notebook locking up

Hi all,
with thanks to all those on site who were able to give me tips on buying a laptop (notebook) I have now purchased one I am generally very happy with - a Compaq Presario V4002AP. It has all the grunt I need for work and play (DVD's look beaut!)
My only drama it locks up after a while on battery. I don't just mean it goes into hibernation or is doing anything that would appear to be designed to extend the battery, it just totally locks up. CNTRL+ALT+DEL doesn

Re: Notebook locking up

Could it be getting too hot? In that case you'd have to leave it to cool down before it would work again.
Or does it start up immediately when you power-cycle it, which would probably mean that it wasn getting hot...?

No Blue Screen Of Death, I suppose...

No John, I don't think it would be a case of heat (but good suggestion - I'll keep my ear open for the fan just to be sure). It is happening even if the l/t is being used on a hard surface and therefore ventilation is fine. Plus, even if I reboot straight away, it doesn't lock up straight away which I suspect it would do if it was still too hot. And no, no blue screen of death.

Do you have a spare battery to try? What OS and is it up-to-date with service pack & patches? What are your power settings?

Re: Notebook locking up

I don't think the battery will make any difference. The problem occurs on power as well as on battery, and the battery being barely a month old seems good...I get a couple of hours out of it at least (even with a few reboots). I also don't think it will be the power settings (which are all "default" anywayz) as it is not a case of the machine going into hibernation or standby - it just locks up!

Aha... you didn't say that in the original post. I think you'd better run, not walk, to the nearest phone or email and see about getting warranty coverage. It seems to me, with a new machine, it shouldn't matter whether it's a heating, battery or whatever kind of problem - it needs to be serviced while it's in warranty. Of course, there's always the "remote chance" that some software thingie that you might have done could be causing the lockup, at least in the eyes of your supplier.

Re: Notebook locking up

Sorry Bigal, I didn't mention that did I , but yeah - it happened both on power or battery.
I did get something right and haggled for the extended warranty just in case - not that it matters when the problem occurred within a month! And yes, you picked it - I made the phone call first (I don't know where my call to the Australian HP help centre ended up, but the nice lady on the end of the phone certainly didn't have an "Ocker" accent and knew nothing about where I was calling from in Oz..mmmm...) Anyway, I was given your advice re a complete reinstall which I have done. It seems to be working, but I've lost all the preinstalled software that was not on DVD (eg MP10 DVD Codecs , and Norton's - but I prefer AVG anyway) as well as my own stuff. Now I know they say that "non factory" software such as games can cause problems...but what is the point of having a machine if you can't get it to do what you want?
Anyway - if it crashes again, it will be going back to the shop. I just hope a monthly format isn't a standard requirement. Like I said, I'm otherwise totally stoked with my purchase!
Thanks again folks

Does stoked mean "chuffed" or "cheesed off"?!

Have you never "Surfed" Sir ???

On the ocean I mean. Stoked is an old surfer term for psyched up, excited, pleased, etc.

Re: Notebook locking up

Well, it was the hard drive so I did take a trip to the propellar heads at HP & they were really good! They replaced the hard drive which seems to be the main point of origin of the fault, but also RAM, opical drive and other assorted tits and bieces too complicated to understand, It would appear COMPAQ/HP have great machines....but the quality control guy is a bit unrealiable as they leave the factory.
All is now good, so yes I am stocked, chuffed, and basically just pretty happy that we can view and burn our up coming holiday photos during our trip. (The trip will include some time in the surf, but I wouldn't call it surfing. More like one of those embarassing exercises where green peace turn up trying to stop you "beaching" yourself.!

Thanks again
