    Datagrid wont display (Win2KPro, VS 2003 (ASP.NET), IIS 5.0, SQL 2000)

Well now that I have this puppy up and running I thought it would be nice to run ASP.NET thru it's paces on a large recordset (55K rows) to implement paging, sorting, banding etc. etc.

Boy let me tell you VS 2003 is, firstly, pretty nifty and, secondly, BIG. Thirdly, it knows a LOT more than I do <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>. But, I don't seem to know what I am doing... it looks ok, but nothing displays on the .aspx page, except a lable.

here's what I do: create a ASP.NET webform. Create a SQL Data Adaptor to do the db connect and find the desired table, do a DataSet and then draw the Datagrid, marry it to said Dataset, click on this thing, that thing, and then something else...VS seems kewl and all (and generates a lot of stuff, gosh, a lot). Go to preview in browser, and... no error, no data grid.

Any ideas? I am running this off a single box, using SQL Server (the local db, not a remote one). I am connecting to the db and issuing a simple Select * against the table.

I already have a paging, banded, sortable table running off the same dataset using ASP classic, so I am doing this as a performance test at the moment. (The ASP classic paging is done using ADO paging and there's a fair amount of text manipulation in the mix so it can be rather slooow). One of these days it will be running off SQL Server stored procs rather than ad-hoc queries via ASP/ADO, but as it is it worketh. I would be happy to see VS 2003/ASP.NET run rings around it tho.

Also, is there a simple way to bind a column in a db/view/stored proc to a drop-down list?

VS 2003 feels like working in a much more competent version of, say, Access data access pages, which is interesting. My understanding is for .aspx pages to work on a webserver, the framework has to be installed. I suppose all these strange supporting files go as well??

Anyhow, I am just getting a few toes wet right now. It's definately interesting!

    TIA

    Steve,

You'll want to spend some time with a book or web article(s) to become familiar with things like the Datagrid. One article series that has helped me greatly in the past is the Extensive Examination of the Datagrid on 4Guys From Rolla.

Just Google for "asp.net datagrid" to find a wealth of how-to's and such.

    Good luck!

thanks for the response. i have been looking at tutes a bit, but the ones i've seen don't focus on using the VS IDE to do things. although i've always been a 'hands-on' coder I am trying to understand how the VS IDE works rather than wapping out .aspx stuff on my own. since the IDE does the code-behind on it's own, it's actually less confusing for me at this stage. (Actually I don't really grok the whole code-behind metaphor but my understanding is that's the best way to do all things .NET-ty.) And, it's perfectly possible to inspect the generated code so i don't feel completely 'in the dark'.
