Hidden text is turned on automatically (Word 2003/SP1)

When a co-worker opens a document that contains index tokens (hidden text), the hidden text is automatically toggled on. (In Tools>Options>View>Hidden Text). When I open the same document attached to the same template, the hidden text is not toggled on. What might the problem be?? Any ideas??

Click on the Show/Hide icon on the Standard toolbar. This is the backwards "P" or paragraph symbol. Its real name is a pilcrow.

Some of these view options seem to be stored in the document, while others seem to be personal preferences stored on your machine. It appears that the display (or nondisplay) of hidden text reflects the individual user's general preference rather than something stored in the document, but I haven't done any exhaustive testing!

That's what I thought. We checked all of his settings. We opened Word and just opened the blank page. Everything is toggled off and hidden text was not checked in the Tools>Options>.

However, I told him to do "Detect and Repair" and this seemed to have fixed this phantom problem. Thanks!
