installation source not available (Office 2003)

Although my Office installation works alright, Excel kept on asking me if I want to save the file even if it was not changed. Hence I tried detect and repair. However I get "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and you can access it". Even if I try to run setup from the original Office disk I get this message. Anybody any suggestions please?

    Teunis

Do you have administrative rights on the PC or is the group policy set so that it allows you installation rights?

Other ideas include updating your windows installer package (msi) from the microsoft website.

    Jerry,

Unfortunately I cannot automatically; somehow my IE will not download the correct ActiveX component even though ActiveX is activated. I even reinstalled XP SP2 to try to repair that one, to no avail. So I download my Office updates manually. But to what updates do you refer?

What "Other" MS software and version do you have installed on this machine?

Also did a copy of "Works" come installed on the machine?

As for the Active X, some pop up blockers will block the download and install, also check your firewall so that the update has permissions.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: installation source not available (Office 2003

    Dave,

Other standard MS Office Software: Visio, Project, ORK etc, everything 2003 and updated to the latest patch etc. All of them giving the same error when I try to detect and repair.
The machine came without any SW installed, except for Toshiba utilities and Win XP home.
I try to avoid "cleaning" Office and reinstalling it, although I saved my settings with the save my settings wizzard.

You could try using the local installation source tool to enable the local installation source which will make sure all that installation files are available on your hard drive. To use this there must be at least 2.5Gb of space available (the installation files do not need that much space but the tool will not run if there is less than 2.5Gb available).

    Tony,

I downloaded the file but on installing I get this error. Thanks anyway. It looks like I have to remove the installer info with MS AddRemoveProgramsCleanUp and then reinstall Office2003. System Restore did not help either.

Re: installation source not available (Office 2003)

    Good Day,

The original problem is that Excel asks to save changes when you have not made any?
Excel always asks to save changes if you have any formulas that recalculate.
If you open a new worksheet and close without making any changes Excel should close quietly.

Re: installation source not available (Office 2003

That's only partly true, pertains rather to formulas like Rand with (re)calc set to automatic. The workbook I had just contained simple ones.
Unfortunately that's not my major problem anymore.

    Teun

Re: installation source not available (Office 2003

    1. For your original question, it is known bug for all Office versions since 2000. A workaround is: copy the entire Office Installation CD to a separate folder on your hard drive and point Windows Installer to this folder when prompted. For Office 2003, if you use Local Installation Source Tool, remember: it will copy only PART of the Installation CD files (which were actually used for your installation), so some updates may prompt you for installation source anyway. A workaround is the same: copy entire Installation CD to the appropriate folder - MSOCache< username >< clsid > (this folder and all subfolders are hidden).

    2. For your problem: the cause of Excel prompt to save changes even if nothing was changed is probably macros in your global template ( Cocuments and Settings< your username >Application DataMicrosoftExcelExcel11.xlb) or add-ins in Cocuments and Settings< your username >Application DataMicrosoftExcelXLSTART and C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11XLSTART folders.

Re: installation source not available (Office 2003

"Visio, Project, ORK etc" have you tried the CD's from these products, because the current update from MS in not just Windows but all products, it is now called Microsoft Update.

When ever possible allow the CD's to be copied to you hard drive on installation and you may not have this problem.

Re: installation source not available (Office 2003

    Thanks for the info.
Ad 1) I'll try that and Dave's suggestion to try repairing other Office 2003 components e.g. Visio from their CDs. Unfortunately the latter has to wait since I don't have the CD here.
Ad 2) Actually PaulBonney pointed into the right direction: I had a NOW() formula in the workbook which is the cause of that problem! So I feel rather stupid wasting everybody's time!

I'll let you know if it worked.

For now, thanks all of you.
    Regards, Teun
