Auto numbering (2002 XP2)

Desire outline format with auto numbering linking Level two with it's own section, independent from previous section numbers, i.e.
    First Section would be Level 1: Heading 1, Level 2: Headings: 101, 102, 103;
    Second Section Level 1: Heading 2, Level 2: Headings: 201, 202, 203, etc.
    Third Section Level 1: Heading 3, Level 2: Headings: 301, 302, 303
    Is this possible?

Assuming you are using autonumbers on the Heading 1 then you can continue using the same top level heading style at the start of each section. What you have described can all be done with only two styles.

Can you tell me why you think you need the numbering streams to be independent of the previous section numbering?

    Re: Auto numbering (2002 XP2)

Thanks for the quick response. When we created the two levels, the second level would not "begin" with the correct "first" digit, instead would repeat the exact same numbering sequence. Instead of Level 2 in Section 2 beginning with 201, it started again with 101, etc. Possibly I mislead you by using the term section, we are not using section breaks but only referring to the different sections of our document. Thus the term "independent" was used and probably misleading.

Is this the format you want? If so then I will explain how the numbered list was created.

    Re: Auto numbering (2002 XP2)

To create this style I first formatted all attributes of the headings except for the numbering.

I then put the cursor in a Heading 1 and clicked on Format > Bullets and Numbering

I selected the Outline numbered tab

I selected the list gallery entry that shows numbering close to what I wanted with Level 2 indents at the correct level and numbered as 1.1, 1.2 etc

I clicked Customize

I clicked the More button and ensured that Level 1 was associated with Heading 1

I clicked on Level 2 and ensured it was associated with Heading 2

I selected number style 01, 02, 03 for Level 2

I deleted the . in the Level 2 format

I Ok'd out of all the dialog boxes[/list]StuartR
