Excel file it takes long time to open it (2000/200

    Hello everybody

I have an excel file 45mb, when I open the file it takes a few minutes for the file to open, but when my colleague tries to open the file it takes him around 10 mins. I have increased the virtual memory size. My computer has 256mb of ram I 've increased the memory size to 640, my colleagues laptop has 512mb of ram incereased his virtual memory to 1280 (2.5*512), still the same. The file is save on a network drive and I' ve created the file.

    Thanks Skender,

    That's a BIG workbook!

Does your colleague have a different anti-virus program on his laptop, or different settings? Assuming that your company scans network disks for viruses, individual workstations shouldn't do that.
Norton Anti-Virus has an Office Plugin that causes a lot of problems, it can be turned off without compromising security as long as Auto-Protect is on.

    Skender

This is the bane of my life. I have a number of accountants that insist on putting their very large Excel workbooks on a shared drive. When they open them it takes ages to open and save/close. They have increased RAM asked for better PC's but it all came down to the speed of our network, the pipe was just not large enough for this amount of data transfer.

My suggestions to these people are to copy the workbook to your local drive, do the work and then place it back on the network, performance will increase dramatically.

    Thanks for your replies:

HansV they use the same Virus software and it has same settings.
Jezza. I did ask them to save the file into their local drive but the perfomance is the same. I just dont understand why for the user who has less RAM memory it takes much less time to open. IT is not logical but is it because the user with less memory has created the file.

Is there a noticeable difference between the first time the workbook is opened after the PC is turned on, and subsequent times during the same session?

I have had a hunt around on the internet and it appears that this is a common problem with laptops and networks.

I found Excel Slow Response time which may or may not assist you. The whole of ExcelTips website has some great info. Good luck

Is the filesize still an issue with Excel? If I recall, Excel starts to misbehave around 40mb. I read this somewhere about 3 to 5 years ago.

    Thanks,
    John
