    Symantec acquires Sygate

YES!!!! What horrible news. See the announcement at Sygate - Enterprise Security Solutions, Personal Firewall Solutions, Professional Services. Time to start looking for a new firewall.

I suppose we should all download their Personal Firewall now -- before it gets whacked, er, changed, by Symantec.

Right, you don't think they'll polish it up and keep it?? <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20> I couldn't make any sense of the press release either, although it certainly *sounds* as if it means something! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> I hate it when language is used to insure that no one understands the message. <img src=/S/aflame.gif border=0 alt=aflame width=16 height=16>

Well, if what I've read is correct they took DriveImage and put a Symantec face on it and called it Ghost 9.0 (not sure if the version is correct). Who knows they may do the same for SPF. But it will still be 'supported' by Symantec (if what they provide can really be called support).

You mean to say that you don't understand:
    <big>Sygate
    <font face="Script MT Bold"><font color=blue><big><big>John</big></big></font color=blue></font face=script>

    Ita, esto, quidcumque...

Yep, that's the one I choked on, John. <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15> I'm still trying to figure out where the endpoint is and what a holistic solution has to do with anything. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    Re: Symantec acquires Sygate

Endpoint compliance is like airport security for your computer. It needs a boarding pass (up-to-date protective software) and must be clean (no sharp objects) before it is allowed to connect to the core of the network.

I think it is very telling that the personal firewall product is not mentioned in the press release. Maybe someone else will buy it before it gets discarded as excess and duplicative code.

I wonder whether I should stop recommending the free version to people? Too soon to tell...

    Re: Symantec acquires Sygate

I must say I went to a whole lot of trouble removing Symantec's products from my computer. I thought I had distanced myself from them, but I now know I was wrong. I use Sygate's Personal Firewall Pro, and if it changes for the worse, like I expect it to, I'll have to ask for a full refund.

I guess I have to start a new search for a comparable firewall product. Anyone have any excellent firewalls to suggest other than Zone Alarm?

Let's not panic. Assume your purchase entitles you to one year of updates, and that they are optional (you can refuse them), why not keep Sygate for the balance of your license and do your shopping then? Unless you have extra <img src=/S/money.gif border=0 alt=money width=17 height=15> burning a hole in your pocket... <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

By the way, I like Agnitum's Outpost Firewall PRO. But I never took the time to compare it in detail to Sygate.

You're right Jeff, just like you always are. I do tend to jump into the pool before checking if it's filled with water. I tool a look at the Firewall you suggested and the cost is nominal.
I won't discard Sygate just yet, perhaps Symantec will surprise me and leave well enough alone (I doubt it, but where there's life there's hope).

Buy the way, I looked at your Bio. Did you really register on 2/1/08? Could that be 1908 or 2008? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Truth is, I'm not an early riser. In the Pacific Time zone, it was more like 10:24 PM the night before. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I stand corrected. I do believe I need my eyes checked.
