    shortcut to a document

In Word97/SR2 there appears to be no way to place a shortcut to a document on a toolbar, except by recording a simple macro to the toolbar.

I've searched the lists in View, Toolbars, Cutomize and I don't see any way to drag a file to a toolbar.

Why would I want to do that? No MRU list can accomodate a desire to have three basic documents available for quick-open. Right now I'm working on three different web "sites", each site has its own Homepage.doc and I'd like to fire up Word and then click on a document name on a toolbar quickly to open that particular file. I may have a hundred intermediate files pass through my MRU before I want to open the second HomePage.doc, but when I do, I really want a one-click method.

    Hi Chris,

You can use the Work menu for this. The Work menu is a built-in menu that enables you to add shortcuts for frequently used files. To add the Work menu:

    - Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
    - On the Commands tab in the Categories list, scroll down and select Built-In menus
    - Drag/Drop the Work menu from the right to a location of your choice

As an additional note there is a command in the menu for Adding, but not one for removing. To remove items:
    - Press <Ctrl Alt Hyphen>
    - Click the Work Menu and then the item you wish to remove

I modified the Name of the WorkAdd To Work Menu command to include the shortcut so I wouldn't forget. Just right-click the command while in the Customize dialog box and add the text to the Name.

Note that the ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut command will remove any menu item.

BAM, thanks for this. I finally worked out that I had to have a document open before I could add anything to the menu.

I added three documents, there they are! Exited Word, re-loaded and the menu was empty.

Oh, I said, that's right, I overwrite my Normal.DOT with a secure copy each time I load Word, so I temporariliy disabled that and tried agin. Nope. When I reload Word97SR2 the Work menu is empty. Is it supposed to be preserved between sessions?

    Hi Chris,

The Work menu shortcuts are stored in the WordData key in the Registry and should be preserved between sessions.

Do you have any type of protection in place for your Registry?

If not then perhaps it is due to a corrupt key.

p.s. I'll be sure to include the Open file information in my future postings. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Thanks for letting me know about this.
