I'm using Excel 2000 SR1. Occasionally I get a spreadsheet from someone where it will allow you to enter a formula but not return the results. It's as if you had added an ' before the = in the formula. Are there options to change this behavior?

Hi,
I know of 2 ways to achieve that effect (there may be more):
1. Tools-Options and on the View tab, check Formulas in the Window Options section
2. Format the cell as text before entering the formula.
The first way is probably more useful as you can switch between formula view and result.
Hope that helps.
