Wait icon won't go away (IE 6 SP1)

My sister's has another problem, this time when she clicks on any link, the wait icon won't go away. The only way she can use IE after that is to reboot..
I haven't heard of this one before. I suggested that she go into the registry and change an IE setting to be able to reinstall. She's deathly afraid <img src=/S/crybaby.gif border=0 alt=crybaby width=15 height=15> to go in there and she doesn't have remote access setup.

Has anyone heard of such a problem? I really want to help her but I don't know what to do. She thinks I'm a cure-all for any problems she has and I'd hate to disallusion her. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

Will someone please post a quick fix?

It's hard to debug this if it affects all links on all sites. If it were more limited, we might check her Pop-up blocker settings (the ones built into IE and any additional ones added by the Google Toolbar, etc.) or issues particular to a specific web page. We also might try testing for basic connectivity by using something like:

    start button, run..., cmd <enter>

    ping PasteURLhere <enter>

One can paste after the ping command by first right-clicking the link in IE, and copying the shortcut, then right-clicking after the word ping and choosing paste.

If Windows can ping the site successfully, it seems like an IE or browser security issue. If the ping times out, it could be an address resolution problem caused by (1) bad host file entries, or (2) internet disconnection, or (3) problems with the ISPs domain name servers.

If you can walk her through that, it should give us good feedback for the next step. Sorry it's not a quick fix!

Forgive me for replying so late, but I've been away.
The situation with my sisters a little bit difficult. She's had heart bypass surgery and a mini stroke and her fingers aren't as fast as they used to be. It seems even her mind's affected, she thinks slower and talks slower. Your suggestion wouldn't work, I couldn't walk her through it if I tried for a month.
I'll have to visit her and try it myself and I can't do that until September.

Thanks for the suggestion, and again I apologize for my late posting.

    Hi Dutchess,

Have your sister run the Disk Cleanup utility Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup and empty her Temporary Internet files and Temp Files by putting a check in the box next to each. But tell her to be certain to UNCHECK the box next to the Compress Old Files option. HTH <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Now that seems like something she can handle. I just emailed your post to her and asked if she could follow the instructions. As soon as I get a reply I'll know if she can or if I have to make the trip.

    Thank you Doc.
