    Webroot Spy Sweeper 4.0 (4.0)

Has anyone had any experience with Webroot Spy Sweeper? How does it stand up to other spyware detection programs, partiulary Sypbot?

I don't have any personal experience with this product. There are a number of different review sites on the web that seem to offer varying opinions, based on how they tested and what is the most important to them.

Generally speaking, most people who are concerned about adware and spyware choose to have several different scanners. Unlike software firewalls and anti-virus packages, there does not seem to be much conflict between the different spyware packages, so you can run more than one. Since Spybot Search & Destroy is free, and Ad-aware is free for home use, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta is free until they decide how to charge for it, you can keep these handy and up-to-date to supplement any commercial products you decide to buy.

I have been using Spy Sweeper for over a year and like it very much. It's not the same type of product as Spybot and is much more involved with actively protecting your system from the types of changes and activity that are common with malware. It's more like an AV program than a "standatd" spyware program like Adaware or Spybot. It actively monitors system changes and and activity in real time. The reviews have always been good and it consistently scores in the top 3 programs. But they strike me as more a statement about whose definitions are the most current than which product is better at what it does. I would recommend it without reservation.

I, too, have been using SpySweeper for quite some time. It's reliable, inexpensive, and quite good. I like it. It's recommended that you use other antispyware (e.g., Spybot S&D, Microsoft Antispyware, AdAware) as well -- no one program will find or remove everything. One should use multiple antispyware applications. So, it's not really a matter of it "standing up to Spybot."
