    outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

For the past 4 days, outlook has frozen at opening. I have tried running it in safe mode; performed a disk clean and defrag. The combination sometimes works (it then tells me that the pst file wasn't closed correctly or that the archive file wasn't closed correctly and then goes through a process to close them). This seems to work until the next time I restart and then it re-occurs. I tried to back-up export the pst andor archive file to a back-up file. But, have not resolved the problem. My current thinking is to bak-up the personal folder and then delete all messages and then import back. But, am open to suggestions before I take this drastic approach.

Are you using a PST (or more than one)? If so, have you run scanpst.exe (a.k.a. the Inbox Repair Tool) aginst it (them) to clean up any problems?

In addition to JohnBF's post can you do a search for *.pst and tell us the current size of your PST files please? (Right-hand mouse click the file in the search results pane and select properties from the menu)

Re: outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

John and Jerry - Ran scanpst.exe on both archive.pst and outlook.pst. Archive had no errors and was 930,581 kb. Outlook had "one item not found" and was 351,056 kb. So, I ran the repair module and it said repair complete. Re-ran scanpst.exe and no errors found. SO, the moral of the story is even when you run outlook in safe mode and run "detect and repair", one shouldn't assume that it included scanpst as part of the check.

Thanks and I'll let you know if problem re-appears.

Re: outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

Having taken the advise and ran scanpost.exe, I thought that the problem was resolved. Sadly, that is not the case. In the past three days, outlook has continued to freeze. The processes I have taken are as follows: ran scanpost; ran disk clean; ran defrag; Restart computer; start outlook. It tells me that my personal folder was not closed properly and runs detect and repair. It then freezes. So, I bring up task manager and end task. I then restart outlook. This process re-cycles 3 or 4 times and then it tries to start in safe mode. This allows me to download and sometimes read some email before it freezes. After 3 or 4 more recycles of this freezing, safe mode disappears and outlook works for a few hours.

When I close outlook and shut down the machine for a few hours (or overnight) and then re-start, the process re-occurs.

I think my only option left is to export outlook.pst; then delete outlook and re-install it; then import the messages into outlook and try re-installing the microsoft updates.

Does anyone have an alternative plan?

Re: outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

Is this a standalone client machine, or are you on Exchnage Server?

There are a number of things that you can do. First, make a couple of backups of your PST - close Outlook and copy the file a couple of time to another temporary location. Then rename your normal PST to "<mypst>.PST.OLD". Restart Outlook - it will complain loudly about the absence of the PST, follow the dialogs to create a new one. You may also need to recreate any custom settings etc. If it freezes up in the process of creating a new PST, the problem is probably with the Outlook Installation. If it doesn't, then there's more likely a problem with your PST.

If it's more likely Outlook and you have easy access to your installation disks, uninstall Outlook, run a regisrtry cleaner like "RegSeeker" and use it to delete -invalid- Outlook, Mapi and Exchange references, and then reinstall Outlook. (Detect-and-Repair ain't that great.)

If it's your PST it could be due to:
    - a corrupt item - these can be hard to find
    - exceeding your Inbox (or other message Folder) message limits

Post back with what you find, and we'll try to help from there.

Re: outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

    Thanks John

The machine is a stand alone. I have gone ahead and made extra copies and save them. I also ran the repair module through the addremove program feature. I did notice one other anomoly. It seems that even when I get outlook to run, each time it processes an email which has an attachment, it seems to freeze. It is currently working. If it crashes again, I'll go ahead an delete and re-install outlook per your suggestion. By the way, how can I find out what the message limit is and, if necessary, increase it?

Re: outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

The limit used to be about 16,000 messages per folder if you used "large tables" but in Outlook 2003 the PST was re-engineered to handle UNICODE much larger item counts and overall size (though I can't find find the folder item limits for 2003 anywhere).

The lockup on attachments would be a Temporary Internet File (TIF) Space issue in Outlook 2000 or pre-SP Outlook XP, but I thought that was also resolved in Outlook 2003. See if any of the ideas in these posts help, especially the first one:

Post back if this doesn't help.

Re: outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

    John

Have tried everything you suggested and then some. No Joy!!!

    Here'w what I've done:

    run disk clean
    run defrag
    run repair through "add/remove programs"
    reboot
    start outlook - it freezes.
do ctrl/alt/delete and task manager tells me that outlook is not responding
    hit "end task"
re-start outlook - it starts to run detect and repair - finishes and freezes
do ctrl/alt/delete and task manager tells me that outlook is not responding
    hit "end task"
re-start outlook - offers to run in "safe mode"; type "yes" - it freezes.
do ctrl/alt/delete and task manager tells me that outlook is not responding
    hit "end task"
open "windows Explorer" and find "outlook.pst" - rename it.
re-start outlook - it complains; but eventually creates a new ".pst" file and then freezes
get frustrated and curse Gates - nothing happens
    decide to delete outlook
start control panel and "add/remove programs; find office; click on change and then remove component.
    run disk clean
    run disk defrag
    run registry mechanic
    re-boot
start control panel and add/remove programs - add outlook - success
start outlook - it gets all new messages. read messages WOW, I think I've done it.
    close outlook
re-start outlook - start to delete messages - after deleting the third message - it freeezes!!!

So, I am back to cursings Gates and have exceeded all of the thoughts that I have to fix this damn thing. At this poit, I have 2 .pst files. The one I renamed "old" and the new one that was created when I re-installed outlook.

Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm unclear on one thing - are you now using a new PST, and Outlook is still locking up, or are you now using the PST you used prior to the reinstall?

Re: outlook freezes (outlook 2002 SP3)

I'm using the new outlook.pst file. The old version is now outlook.old as you recommended. I didn't mention that I had previously created a new outlook file and then imported the old file. When this continued to freeze, I deleted the newly created pst file as well as the outlook program and started again (using the sequesnce listed in the prior post). If the problem had disappeared, I would have then tried to import from the old file.
