    Autonumbering in tables (2000 SP-3)

<img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29>I've done a search for my 'challenge' and was surprised not to find anything - maybe I didn't use the right keywords.

I have a 86 page document created by somebody else which uses autonumbering extensively. I've been asked to do a paragraph by paragraph analysis/comment on this. So far I have converted the pages from portrait to landscape and created a table with one column based on paragraph marks. I now want to insert a new blank column (for my analysis/comments) to the right of the existing column.

However when I do this all of the new cells in the new column autonumber themselves (which affects the autonumbering in the original column). I do want to retain the numbering in the first column.

How do I freeze (or convert to text) the original autonumbering or stop the autonumbering from occuring in the new column.

    Original Table looks like.
    <table border=1><td>1.1(text)</td><td>1.2(text)</td></table>
After inserting a second column to the right I get
    <table border=1><td>1.1(text)</td><td>1.2(blank)</td><td>1.3(text)</td><td>1.4(blank)</td></table>
and this is what I want:
    <table border=1><td>1.1(text)</td><td>(blank)</td><td>1.2(text)</td><td>(blank)</td></table>
    A virtual <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> to any/all that have a solution. No <img src=/S/pun.gif border=0 alt=pun width=22 height=18> intended <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Select the second column and remove the numbering (Format > Numbering > None).

ARGHHHH!!! So simple, and it worked. I was looking for a much more complicated way of doing it!

    Many thanks and <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> to you!

    Bowlie,

Have you tried doing Copy, Paste Special, Unformatted Text with the paragraph numbers? I would advise this anyway as you need to refer to the original numbers.

In fact using Paste Special is a very good habit as, although you must then apply styles & formatting ,you know you haven't brougt any junk in.

    Hi Liz,
Thanks for the suggestion. I did think about doing that, but there is lots of other formatting in the original text that I didn't want to lose. I'm a big fan of paste special (I've even changed my Ctrl-V to Paste Special rather than Paste) and use it more often than paste.

That is a useful technique, but with a slightly different purpose. Bowlie wanted to get rid of the numbering altogether. The method described in the post you refer to converts automatic numbering maintained by Word into fixed text that can be edited manually.

You are right, I guess I got sidetracked.

Yes, but I would have used this if I had known it. Once the document was created and published on the Web the autonumbering lost it's value. In fact it would have been counter-productive if the numbering were to change after being published.

Will put these ideas into my quiver, for future use!

    But it was still useful, see Bowlie's reply. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

But not at all ... I've taken the coding:
    ActiveDocument.Range.ListFormat.ConvertNumbersToTe xt
    and created a button on my toolbar that runs this once I've finalised a document. This will be of much use in the future. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

The Macro now living on my toolbar! Thanks to all and <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> for everyone! (except me, I've got an 86 page document (105 in landscape) to analyse <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>)
