    Drawing canvas (Word 2003)

I am trying to draw a simple line. When I click on the line symbol on the drawing tool bar I get a large, 4 inch long, drawing canvas in my document. After drawing the line and clicking away from the drawing canvas, the line remains but the 4 inches below the line is unavailable for for continue text in my document. (I want the text to continue just below the line.) How do I get rid of this drawing canvas or shrink its size. This never happened in earlier versions of Word.

    Jim,

I think you shuld be able to use the drawing handles to shrink the size of the picture, that is when you are outside of the picture itself.

I wonder why you are drawing a line like this or is this a simple question for a more general application? I have avioded using any drawing capability in Word as the drawing Layer used to be very flakey. I will do drawing anywhere other than Word then copy them in -using Paste Special so I only get what I want and keep the file size down.

Try clearing the check box at Tools > Options > General > Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes

    Stuart,
That is the right solution. I can't figure out why anyone would want that *!#@% drawing canvas.
    Thanks.
