Faking a Gantt chart (Excel XP)

    Hi everyone,

I'm supporting a department who wants to see their data in a format that looks like a Gantt chart. They don't have Project and would prefer not to use it.

I've created a bar chart of their data that looks like a Gantt chart, but I'm running into 2 problems.

    1) The bars all show as having the same start date. Is there a way to create a bar chart where the left side of the bars "float"? In other words, I want each bar to start on its real date, not on the X axis.

    2) I want the Y axis major gridlines to be by year, and the minor gridlines to be each quarter in the year. So far, I have not been able to format the axis that way.

I've attached the Excel file that represents my progress. Can anyone help me out?

    Thanks in advance,

    Beej

Check out Re: Gant Charts for some suggestions.

Most times it is a matter of using stacked bars and setting no fill or lines for the lower bar to make the items "float" (which means making intermediate data to plot correctly)

Jon Peltier also has a Gantt Chart example that may help you in creating one.
