    Fax Console (SP2)

    Hi Everyone,

I've never been able to send or receive from MS Fax Console (V5.1, Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack 2) . When the program is opened, Norton AV 2005 sends a security alert that it has blocked a trojan horse attempt (attached, I hope). According to AV's "help", a trojan horse can be good or bad, either way they are blocking it, and I have the option to suppress further alerts.

So if I choose "Don't show an alert for this threat again", does that prevent the block? Is that something I should do? Or does the problem lie elsewhere?

    Sigh,
    Kris

    Re: Fax Console (SP2)

Back in August kaplinb responded to my fax question, but I guess it has been lost. Here it is:

*Strange... "FXSCLNT" is not in Symantec (owner of Norton) database, so it is not suppose to be on trojans list.

Just guessing: your Fax Console executable file (fxsclnt.exe) is outdated. The most recent version is 5.2.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158), size: 140 KB, date: 8/4/2004 12:56 AM
This file is included in SP-2, you have the SP-1 file. Try to reinstall SP-2 (I hope you still have SP-2 CD or downloaded the file WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en ).*

Well, it scared me to think of reinstalling SP-2. I was just happy it installed in the first place with no problems. So I sort of let it slip. Here I am now with a belated thanks, and an attempt to fix the fax again. Yes, I have the SP-2 CD. I looked for the filename on the CD, but I guess it is not that easy. I found fxsclnt.exe in the system32 subdirectory, and it is dated 08/04/04 at 0:56:50. Viewing inside this file (good old ZTree), it is version 5.2.2600.2180 with the filename you give above. There are 3 .dll files dated 08/29/02, fxscfgwz (Configuration Wizard 6, version 5.2.1776.0), fxsclntR (Fax Console Resources 6, version 5.2.1776.0), and fxsroute (Fax Routing DLL 6, version 5.2.1776.0), and a file named faxpatch.exe also dated 08/04/04.

Now what. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> I had thought about hunting for a free fax program or trying to find an update from the modem site. The modem included in my Dell system is identified as Intel 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem. When I first sent this question in August, I was running NAV 2005. The new NAV 2006 shows the same trojan attempt. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

And again, thanks. Sorry for the delay in responding.
    Kris
