Upgrade Office 2002 SBE to Office 2003 Pro

I have responsibility (for a philanthropic organization) for maintaining a Windows XP Home laptop,
on which Office 2002 Small Business Edition is installed. Without going into a lot of gory detail
as to what has recently transpired, I need to upgrade the Office software so that Power Point is
installed.

I would like to purchase an Office 2003 Professional upgrade CD and upgrade the entire suite to
Office 2003, while I am at it. That way, not only do we get PP but also Publisher and Access.
Also, the organization owns a desktop on which Office 2003 Professional is already installed. I
feel there's an added advantage in upgrading the laptop to the 2003 suite so that the software on
both machines will be identical.

Question: Does anyone anticipate a problem upgrading from an Office 2002 SBE base to Office
2003 Professional? I know there would be no problem upgrading to Office 2002 Professional.

BTW, just to complicate the story , we do have what appears to be an authentic Office 2002 Professional upgrade CD but the certificate of authenticity, containing the product key, is currently missing in action. Just thought I'd throw that in!

TIA.

There should be no problem upgrading from XP SE to 2003 Professional. You say that your "organization owns a desktop on which Office 2003 Professional is already installed". If this is a Retail version of Office 2003 (as opposed to an OEM version that came preinstalled on the desktop) and you have access to the installation CDs, then the MS licence allows you to install the product on a desktop AND a notebook. If this is the case, you may be able to save the purchase price of an upgrade copy. This does NOT apply to an OEM version however.

I'm pretty sure that the license allows it only on a machine not in use at the same time as the other. MS is not that generous.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, although I do have access to the CD's, the Office 2003 Pro came preinstalled on the desktop (It's a major manufacturer's machine). So I guess that option is out.

The actual Office 2003 EULA states:

1.1 Installation and use. You may:
(a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer or other device; and
( install an additional copy of the Software on a second, portable device for the exclusive use of the primary
user of the first copy of the Software.

In any event you are probably correct Joe. The "for the exclusive use of the primary user of the first copy of the Software" clause would probably rule out the second installation in this case.

Right. And in reality, that option wasn't there to start with. I should have read the EULA more carefully before I suggested this (see my <post#=513000>post 513000</post#> ).

By the way, they changed the packaging of applications AGAIN in Office 2003. While the new RETAIL "Standard" edition contains the "big 4" (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) like 2002 Standard, the new OEM and RETAIL "Small Business Edition" has been sweetened from its earlier incarnations with both PowerPoint and Publisher. In any event, if Access is not needed, you could save some dough by getting the Standard edition.

Re: Upgrade Office 2002 SBE to Office 2003 Pro

My original plan was to upgrade to Office 2003 Standard but the "powers that be" like the idea of the laptop software being the same as the desktop software. The difference in price, at least on newegg.com, is about $70-75.

Thanks.
