Re: ZoneAlarm6 breaks USB keychain memory

What and where has you convinced that it is ZA that is the problem?

Please explain as to how you determined this.

We am running ZA 6.0.631.003 on 4 different machines and NON of them are giving us any USB "Thumbdrive issues".

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: ZoneAlarm6 breaks USB keychain memory

I should mention that I'm also running Norton AV Pro 2004, and that my ZA is 6.0.631.003
but what has me convinced it's ZA is that disabling ZA cures it perfectly.
Please refer to the description of the crashes on the Board and article that I mentioned,
for a little more about the crashes.
The never happened before. For years I've been able to use the Lexar thumbdrives.
The latest one was bought a year and a half ago. On August 23 I did the ZA upgrade,
from 5.5 to 6.0. On August 28 I started having these crashes, with some variation, and
getting worse, so that today (August 29) they were generally taking the form of a quick
sequence: a) I plug in the thumbdrive --> it's detected and --> c), within 2 seconds the screen
turns black and rebooting starts. Next time I boot up (after cutting the bootup at login,
and turning the PC off, so that I can remove the stick, because otherwise the crash happens
automatically when bootup gets to the device) I get a microsoft message
with the codes for the error.
No other software installs or upgrades (other than AV and spware definitions) intervened.
Virus and spyware scans never found anything.
The sticks work fine on other PC's, the error happens identically with the other USB ports,
etc etc, and disabling ZA (but not disabling NAV or CS) cures the problem totally.
That's about it.
There might once again be an interaction with NAV or something else, as there was with
the earlier ZA. Who knows what interactions are involved. I think it's worth flagging.

Re: ZoneAlarm6 breaks USB keychain memory

I just checked the ZoneAlarm forums. I did not look at postings, but at the announcement at the top of the page.
They said they were aware that people were experiencing "issues" with 6
(they didn't specify or give a reference)
but that the issues seemed to be with upgrades rather than clean installs.
So, I thought I should acknowledge here that I did an upgrade (from 5.5).
I guess I had an issue.

Re: ZoneAlarm6 breaks USB keychain memory

Afterword: I did a clean install of ZA6, uninstalling ZA6 first, via Control Panel.
I had the same problem, though it started out mild, in the same style as yesterday's
crashes did (eg, the first time, it was going for the "safely remove" that caused the crash).
I uninstalled 6 and installed 5.5, using the installation file that I still had on one of my computers,
and have no problem now.

So much for the "clean install" spiel. Though formerly there was a somewhat elaborate process
to do the cleaning. But I thought ZA6 was beyond that

ZoneAlarm6 breaks USB keychain memory

(Edited by jscher2000 on 29-Aug-05 22:19. Added link to the other thread.)
Hi --
A warning about ZA6 (free), and if anyone can suggest a fix I'd like to know. I've spent hours (and some lounge air on another forum) trying to figure out what was suddenly making my USB keychain memory devices crash my XPH system. Turns out it was my recent 5.5 --> 6.0 upgrade. I have no explanation, and I would like to know if there are any settings that might be responsible. But, mostly, I wanted to warn folks. The last time I was this steamed was when ZA in a previous version disabled, and silently, the NortonAV's automatic checking of incoming mail. Any tips would be appreciated. (There are enough details about the crashes etc in my posting titled "USB keychains now cause crashes" on the XP board.)

My primary purpose for this posting is to warn folks, or clue them in if they're getting a similar phenomenon.

Glad you got it worked out and fixed the problem rather than using the workaround of shutting down ZA to use your USB drives.

Re: ZoneAlarm6 breaks USB keychain memory

I have followed this thread and finally had to jump in. I run ZAPro 6.x on WinXP Pro and have had no interference with my SanDisk 1 Gb thumb drive, so it may be a problem between the driver for your thumb and ZA 6.

Can't we (that is the collective we meaning you - the ) lock one of these threads with a note rather than continuing the double posting?

Your wish is my command, mon ami. I'll lock the other one, since the issue seems to be more ZoneAlarm and thumb drives than Windows.
