Re: Alignment of first TOC tab (WordXP)

    See the attached.
It seems the TOC is creating an auto tab at about 4cm each time you update the table. The settings in the attachment is set for each line to have 3.25 and 14 cm tabs. However, to correct the layout, you need to delete the tab at 4cm on the ruler atfetr you refresh the TOC. I cannot determine why the tab gets added??

Tab stops that create themselves automatically in the TOC are commonly referred to as 'Jason Tabs'. Do a search on this forum for discussions about them. You can't avoid the Jason Tab but you can render it harmless by using a hanging indent in your TOC styles to position the text at 3.25cm.

Do you want the word 'Heading' to appear in every heading AND in every line of the TOC as well? If you create this as an autonumbered entry (without the number) you would simplify the task considerably.

Can't say I've ever heard of Jason Tabs. One guess who came up with the idea!! <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>
Thx for this informative reply Andrew. I'll certainly do a lookup on this to add to my knowledge.
    Cheers

Re: Alignment of first TOC tab (WordXP)

I do wish the word "Heading" to appear in every line. I have tried modifying the style by adding a hanging indent, or a left aligned tab stop: The result in both cases is that the page number alighnment moves (not fhe alignment of the Title). Attached is an example.

Do you really have headings that do not contain anything other than the word 'Heading'? If so do you want these to appear in the TOC? Both sample files you have posted have included a sample where this was the case - these are the lines that are giving you the the problem.

Assuming the answer to the first question is yes then you do have a problem. But I would ask what is the point of having such an item in either the body of the document or in the TOC?

If the answer is no then I can't see what the problem actually is. I can update the TOC and things still stay aligned quite happily.

Re: Alignment of first TOC tab (WordXP)

The headings are of this nature. I simplified it to isolate the problem, which is aligning the first tab stop.

    Here is an rea lifeexample:

    Schedules
Schedule 1 <tab> The Commonwealth of Australia
    Schedule 2
Schedule 3 <tab> Diagrams and explanatory notes

I need to align the text of the title with the other TOC styles. However, I cannot see a way to align both the page numbers, and the title. In the previous example, it looks okay, but I cannot align the title.

Re: Alignment of first TOC tab (WordXP)

In that example, I would assign a different style to the Headings that don't have any text next to them ie Schedules and Schedule 2.

Then in the TOC I would build it based on styles rather than outline level. A representative TOC field would then look something like this
    {TOC t "Heading 1,1,Heading 1 NoText,2,Heading 2,3,Heading 2 NoText,4"}

Then modify the styles for each TOC entry so that the text is positioned appropriately.
