    Word hyphenation/keeping important items together (2002 sp3)

Is there a setting that can be checked to make Word automatically hyphenate words for you? I noticed in system information that Word Auto-Hyphenation was as marked as false, which probably just means that the setting isn't checked to automatically hyphenate something when it runs out of room at the end of the sentence. However, I thought I would ask everyone here to see if there was such a setting to make Word do the hyphenating for me. At the same time, I'm wondering if there is a setting to make Word keep important text together at the end of a sentence. I know I can use CTRL/Shift space or hyphen, but sometimes these things aren't caught when multiple reports are being typed every day.

I've probably made this more confusing then necessary. Basically, I would like Word to automatically hyphenate words that are supposed to be hyphenated on a regular basis and keep them together at the end of a sentence, along with keeping other important text from being separated, such as 3 ------------------------------------ mg.

If anyone knows of such settings, I would appreciate it if you could educate me.

    Thank you.

Automatic hyphenation is a document/template level setting, not an application level setting.
If you open your Normal.dot and tick the check box "Automatically hyphenate document" in Tools | Language | Hyphenation, then save Normal.dot, the setting will be "on" in all new documents.
You'll still have to turn on automatic hyphenation in existing documents.

I'm not aware of a special setting for the end of sentences.

To keep together "3 mg", you use a non-breaking space instead of the space (Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar).

If you want to avoid that Word hyphenates a certain word (at the end of a sentence or elsewhere), you can select it and set it to "Do not check spelling and grammar" in the language dialog.

Thank you both for your input. Hans, I will set up the auto-hyphenation and give it a try to see what happens--thank you!
