    Bar Chart Labels (Office 2003)

On previous versions of Excel, one could place all the labels outside the end of a bar chart by clicking on the data labels, then Format, Data labels, Label Position, Outside End. However, with Excel 2003 there are only 3 options of Inside End, Center, Center, or Inside Base. The Outside End option is no longer there. It appears that I now have to select each label and manually drag it to the outside end position. Does anybody know of an easier way?

    Thanks in advance

I don't have Excel 2003, so I can't verify what happened to the Outside End option.

You can download and install Rob Bovey's free XY Chart Labeler. This utility will add an XY Chart Labels submenu to the Tools menu. One of the options is to move data labels, with the option to move all of them at once.

On my XL2003 it is available on both the bar and column charts except if it is stacked.

I seem to recall (but can't confirm now) that previous versions are the same: the "outside end" is not available with stacked charts.

Re: Bar Chart Labels (Office 2003)

Thanks to you, I see what happened now. I had modified a stacked bar chart by removing one of the stack levels, making it appear to be an unstacked or clustered bar chart. However, when I checked the chart type after reading your post, it was still appearing as a stacked bar chart. After I changed it to clustered bar, the Outside End option reappeared.

This forum is great - problem solved in just a few minutes! Thanks again.
