Mail messages don't really close (2003)

I don't understand why, when I click the close button in the upper right coner of a mail message, it doesn't really close. By the end of the day, I have a stack of 15 or more messages in my Outlook toolbar icon. When I go to shut down, I get a parade of windows, "do you want to save" messages and so on. Am I missing a setting somewhere that really closes them down? Thanks.

Maybe your button is customized? I usually close messages by pressing Esc. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

If you are getting the "Do you want to save this message?" dialog, it implies that the message was changed some way. But I have no idea what is causing the change. Do you have any macros that operate on incoming messages? What are your settings under Tools | Options | Security | Download Pictures - Change Automatic Download Settings... ?
