    netstat

when I do a netstat /a I can see that my computer is listening on a port but I don't know why.
does anyone know how I can tell my computer to not listen to a port and/or how i can tell what application is using the open port?

Try this site to get a program that scans your local ports:
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.jpsoft.dk>http://www.jpsoft.dk</A>
Also, go to Google.com and do a search for "port scanner". It will give you lots to choose from.
