    Word Counter (Office XP)

I debated about searching the bowels of MS KB info or asking you folks for help. You folks are much friendlier and IMHO know more anyway. So here

I don't think you can turn this feature off - others will correct me if I'm wrong.

You could try Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> on the problem PCs.

    Hi miladytn,

If you use the 'Web Layout' view, you'll see that those stats are greyed out and are not calculated. That seems to suggest the document would be released for editing sooner. Mind you, I much prefer the 'Print Layout' view.

Could it be the background repagination in Print Layout view (mandatory) or Normal view (optional, set under Tools>Options...,General)?

Jefferson that appears to be a great idea, unfortunately Repagination in Word cannot be totally turned off. This is because Word has to repaginate the document in page layout and print preview in order to correctly display the document.

The Microsoft KB file seems to have gone amiss on this subject but the following is a list of actions that cause Word to repaginate the document, even when Background Pagination is disabled:

I agree that Word defintely will repaginate sooner or later when changing views and updating fields. But I suspect that if the user has taken the action that initiates the repagination, they don't feel quite as badly about waiting as when they've merely opened the document. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Anyway, I try to always work in Normal view unless I'm floating some images. It seems faster to me, and I like to "see" the page and section breaks (I like to see the horizontal line, not the big white space).

Then your idea is an excellent practical solution to the start up problem <img src=/S/gent.gif border=0 alt=gent width=17 height=25>

Thanks folks for all your suggestions. I will check them out when I am forced <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15> back to work next week.
