Can I upgrade to XPPro from Xp Home OEM (XP Pro)

    Help Confused,

After using a desktop I bought running XP pro ( with a Disc).
I am now going to a Toshiba Laptop which has XP Home no disc just rescue discs.

Is it possible to to replace the Home Edition with Pro using the Disc?

If So How do I it.

Or Should I leave as is

    Les,
Yes, it's Ok, IF the Pro CD is a full version of XP. Just reinstall XP pro from the CD. When you start the CD it will be best to format the drive in the laptop first and then do the reinstall. The CD will lead you on the way. I say this because you MAY have a unique setup for the Toshiba. This way you will have a clean start without any remnants of the Toshiba installation.

You will probably have to reregister it with MS after the install is done.

It may be possible - just not legal. Unlike Office, where you may install it on a Desktop and a Laptop (being used exclusively by the same person), Windows XP is licenced for only one computer. If your version of XP is a retail version and it has been installed on the desktop, the Activation process would flag it if you were to install it again on the laptop. If your disk is an OEM version, it is probably linked to your particular desktop model or manufacturer and would probably not let you install it to another system.

    John,
I think if you are no longer using the Desktop with Pro, then you can install it on the laptop.
That's why I said, you may have to reregister it with MS. By phone would be best to explain the circumstances.

    Les,

IF you have any data that you would like to keep then Image it with Ghost. As long as you image to another HD or CD or partition.

Once you get it installed then go to Windows Update and get SP2 and all the latest patches.

    Bob,

I think you mean re-acvtivate not re-register. BTW, it is my understanding that if the XP Pro is an OEM version it is tied to the BIOS of the PC and can't be used on another machine. That is not to say you couldn't hack it someway.

    Joe,
You are absolutely right. ReActivate not register.

I'm not sure about that OEM version. It would seem that a multiple user copy would still be a full copy of XP without a tie to the BIOS. Again, not sure of that, just looking at it logically.

    Bob,

I guess I'm mis-understanding what you mean as all XP versions are multi-user. That has nothing to do with what machines you are allowed to install the OS on. It is my understanding that because of the pricing that MS gives OEMs that those versions are to be installed only on the machine upon which the OS was originally installed. You the user do not have the right to install it on another PC.

Re: Can I upgrade to XPPro from Xp Home OEM (XP Pr

    Joe,
Perhaps the term "multi user" is not the correct term to use.
When an OEM buys, we will say, 100 copies of XP to install on 100 machines, he has used up his 100 machine license.
I buy that machine and use it till I'm ready to junk it and change to a new machine. The system I buy has no operating system on it. I then use my OEM CD to put an OS on the new machine. I am still using one copy on one machine, not multiple machines. This is where reactivation comes in. I don't think MS would challenge this activation.

Copies of OEM software and hardware ( not just XP ) is available all over the place. Why wouldn't the OEMs be all over the backs of the vendors to stop selling the OEM label?
I may be wrong but that's my interpretation.

    Joe,
Per John's post, I stand corrected. Learn something new every day.

I wonder how strictly this restriction is enforced?

    Bob,
There are two types of Windows XP OEM. This article describes the two and outlines the restrictions of each (scroll down near the bottom of the page and look for "OEM Versions" section. If the OP's version came preinstalled on the computer, it is unlikely that it can be moved to another machine.

    Bob,

My understanding is that a mechanism exists to tie the OS to the machine ID/BIOS. How that is accomplished is something I've never tried to figure out.
