corrupt docs -can you recommend recovery software (WordXP SP3)

I was wondering if can recommend and know of any good software to clean up corrupt Word documents - office files.

I use the WordXP feature 'Open and Repair'. Sometimes this works. However Im finding that the corruption doesnt get removed using 'Open and Repair', and if i also apply other workarounds to clean up the doc. eg cut & paste all except last para mark. copy & paste text section by section. etc.

We have the tool Recovery Word. However the result is the doc gets cleaned up but all the formatting is removed. Since we work with large long docs with formatting. I was wondering if theres an alternative.

    many thanks

    Hi Diana,

One very succesful technique for use on problem documents is to go to the very end of the document, hit the enter key to create a new para, then copy everything before the new para (ie don't include the new para) and paste the copy into a new document. Then close the old document and save the new one over it. This is much the same as what you're already doing.

Tables can also be problematic. You may be able to correct any problems they're causing by converting them to text, saving and closing the document, then re-opening it and converting the text back to a table again.

    Cheers

Some minor (table) corruption can also sometimes be fixed by saving in RTF format (or XML in Word 2003).

I've heard that some corrupt documents that can't be opened in Word any more except with "Recover text from any file" can be opened in OpenOffice Writer, with formatting intact.
Not sure if that's something like a lottery win... but since OO is free, it may be worth a try.
