Linspire 5.0.59

I took the opportunity to free download of Linspire 5.0.59 which produced a file called Linspire_5.0.59.iso

I then used Roxio's Easy CD Creator V5 to transfer this file from my C: drive to a copy on a CD

Opening Explorer I can see that the Linspire 5.0.59.iso is on the CD but I don't know how to use this CD to be able run Linspire

The Website said that Linspire can be run from this CD

BUT,

How does one open a ISO file

Does one have to "expand" this ISO file somehow as one does with any other compressed file such as a ZIP file ??

Can someone please help me go on from this point

Hello Max,

The .iso is the file extension to designate a CD Image. It is, in fact, a compressed disk image, much like a .zip file would be.

Your Roxio software should have an option to burn a CD image. Unfortunately, you've basically created a CD drink coaster so far. Simply re-burn the .iso image to a new CD, using the Roxio software again - but look for the image option.

When I opened the Creator Classic option and I click on File I see one option which is called "Record CD from CD Image"
When I select this option it shows a window "Record disc from Image File" and I can drill down to the Linspire .ISO file OK and when I select this file a new window opens called "Record Setup" which if I clicked the OK button it would burn the CD

Could you please tell me if this is the Burn mode I should select ?

If not could you instruct me how I must go about making an Image CD using this Roxio CD & DVD Creator 6 program

Hi again Max! That portion I've quoted sounds like it is EXACTLY what you need to do. I haven't used the Roxio software since it was called Adaptec, and I haven't burned CDs with anything in Windows for I don't know how long. So unfortunately, if the instructions that I've quoted above don't do it for you, then let me know, and I'll get someone with Roxio knowledge to pop in and help out.

As for expanding the .iso file, creating the cd from the "image" does it automatically. There is software "out there" that will do it, and make the file system visable, however I wouldn't know what to suggest to you to use.

Try the "create from image" option you have found, and let me know how it goes.

Yes the CD burn was successful insofar as I can now see a whole suite of Folders/programs on the CD when I "Explore" it !!

My question now Chris is,

How do I go about running Linspire from the CD, (which is what the download Website said that this CD would do), or alternatively if I want place the Linspire OS on a dedicated HD so I could boot-up in Linspire on this HD ?

Can you please help me solve these problems

Chris, my mumbled apologises for harrassing you with my previous reply and the queries therein

I plugged in the CD after I'd sent my message to you and to my Surprise, (and Delight), Linspire Transpired !!!!

Furthermore, I was then able to load it onto a clean HD and subsequently I was able to boot-up IN Linspire

Now I have the task of learning a whole new world of clicks, commands and curses #$%^#$%^$%

So Mate, I must thanking you profuselyfor getting me on to the right track to burn a CD that wasn't jest another BLOODY coaster !!

I had a friend who I relied on for assistance with my computer problems, but unfortunately he died and now I'm on my own #$%^&*

However, I do remember him telling me, (he was using Linspire), that there is some program that runs under Linspire which enables you to run programs which have been written for the Windows environment

If I'm to take on Linspire as my new OS it's imperative that I can run my Windows based programs or have all their data migrated to equivalent Linspire programs

AND,

I have a coupla legacy DOS programs which I MUST also be able to migrate to Linspire before I become a Linspire devotee

SO,

Can you tell me if my wish-list is achievable, or am I asking too much ?

I'm not a linspire user, but there is that type of software available for any linux installation.

With Linspire, they have the click and run tool. It's a point and click software installation tool that costs something like $50 US / year. I believe they have a search utility within that, where you could say "run windows software" or the like.

If you're looking for Linspire support specifically, I suggest you look at the Linspire website. I can only generalize.

Can you run DOS programs under Linux as you can, (as I understand Windows programs can run under Win4Lin) ?

Is there a Linux program like Win4Lin that runs DOS programs ?

Hmmm...

Win4Lin is a package derived from wine, if I'm not mistaken. Wine is "Wine is not an emulator" (bit of trivia). It is my understanding, that DOS and windows software will run under the wine package, but you'll have varying degrees of success depending on the age of the DOS / windows software. In fact, the older the software, the better your chances.

Well my DOS programs are very old and one is written in DBase III
, other I don't remember what coding it uses !!

You mentioned Wine and I had a stickbeak at the Wine Home page and I see that it's a freebee

Do you think Wine would run under Linspire ??
