    Syncing Folders (WinXP-Pro SP-2)

I have a couple of utilities for syncing folders...

Problem is, some of the folders I'm after don't show up because they are set with the "h" attribute.

Does it disturb Windows ops if I change the attribute from hidden, leaving any "sys" or "read-only" alone?

Could you be more specific, Chuck, about which folders you're talking about and (if they're Windows folders) why are you trying to "synch" them rather than just back 'em up? I guess I can't truly answer the question, but I would THINK that if Windows expects a folder to be hidden, you'd be well advised to leave it that way. Therefore, if one needs to do something to the folder, change it temporarily and then set it back the way it was later - for precautionary sake! Just my opinion...

    Chuck,
You can go to Control Panel>Folder Options>Advanced and check the show hidden folders box.
Changing the hidden attrib shouldn't do any harm. That's just to keep "newbies" from doing things to System folders that they shouldn't do. ( out of sight , out of mind ) <img src=/S/ouch.gif border=0 alt=ouch width=15 height=15>

    Bob / Al:

First, Al, it's, for instance, the SendTo folder(s) that are hidden...

Bob, I thought (and surely hope) that you're right, 'cause that's what I had thought. Historically, it has seemed that the "system" and the "read-only" attributes can sometimes affect that way in which files and folders are utilized, but I wasn't sure about the "hidden".

"All" I was trying to do (originally) was copy icons that are generated by a utility that I use to a more central location, But they were stored in a hidden folder, so they weren't showing up in the file manager.

I could, I suppose, just change it back and forth each time, but why, if it wasn't detrimental?

    Anyway, thanks guys.

    Regards,
    Chuck

Anything in a "hidden, system" folder should be left alone as is in tact.

What are these "icons" that you want to move?

That can't (or shouldn't) ALWAYS be the case... The "SendTo" folder, for instance is one that is hidden, and therefore "inaccessible" when you want to copy icons into or remove icons from it for use.

My SendTo folder has the Hidden attribute set, but it is not a System folder. Is yours different?

Stuart: I may be at fault for lumping all folders that are designated at Windows install time as "hidden" as being "system"... On the assumption that they are "system-critical", hence hidden, hence "system" folders.

    My bad...

I do not know where you are getting any "Icons" in the send to" folder. All I have are "Shortcut (links) with a associated icon and some additional sub-folders added by programs.

Or shortcuts, programs, or whatever... The point at issue remains the same, doesn't it?

No, because these items listed in this folder are designed to used from there and no place else. There are registry links to these "items" which are the real controls.

This is WHY Microsoft has made it hard to see the different folders and files, so people (who do not know what they are doing) will NOT <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> them up.

    Re: Syncing Folders (WinXP-Pro SP-2)

    But Dave:

I don't know how many times -- but I'm sure I can find them on a hunt -- that I've read about dropping shortcuts into your SendTo folder -- such as notepad, wordpad, excel, paint... And on ad nauseam -- and they work great I might add...

So why would it now be such a "Stay Clear!!" issue?

Besides, to retro back to the original point, that is only an example of ONE of the folders that are "hidden" that you might need... Hence, in Explorer's options, you can turn them on or off...

In <post#=516,789>post 516,789</post: > by 'file manager' you mean Windows Explorer just change the view as Bob suggested in <post#=516,781>post 516,781</post: >. Then you don't have to manipulate the properties of the folders.

    Re: Syncing Folders (WinXP-Pro SP-2)

    Joe:

I know that as long as I stay totally within the MS realm (and control) when I work, all is OK... That would work if MS would supply me with the tools...

All I started out wanting to do was to sync two folders... There are, as you know, several people/programs out there that do this fine, but they aren't Explorer. So setting the View in Explorer does me no good whatsoever.

I've found several tools that do just fine, but if the folder is marked "hidden", it cannot (obviously) be seen in order to work with it, let alone sync it to anything else.

And that is where this thread was when it started:

If I remove the "Hidden" attribute, will I "harm" anything?

And, as is often the case, MS has done this for convenience apparently, not necessity.

So, it appears the answer is "NO, everything will work fine if it is NOT marked as "Hidden".

    Chuck

    Re: Syncing Folders (WinXP-Pro SP-2)

Did you try to set the file options in Explorer? Those are general settings which are often honored by other programs. You never say whether you try any suggestions. We are trying to get enough information out of you to help you avoid all the effort and exposure to errors that can occur when you go and change properties over and over. Also, there is an MS tool to do file synchronization - Download details: SyncToy v1.0. Last, you should be able to change the hidden property without hurting anything.
