Adding hours and seconds (Excel 2000)

I have a column in a spreadsheet which totals additional hours worked on a yearly basis. I wish the total to be shown in hours and seconds only. I have tried formatting the cell with the total in ' time' and also (h:mm) neither of these return the correct sum. Instead of getting a figure reading 55:30 I am getting 0.30. Where am I going wrong.

In addition to Jezza's advice, if the calculation is otherwise correct, to format times in excess of 24 hours use this custom format:

    [h]:mm:ss
-John ... I float in liquid gardens
    UTC -7ąDS
