    AutoText limitation (2000>)

I understand that the length of an AutoText name must be less than or equal to 32 characters; however, I can't seem to find a reference that says what, if any, is the character limitation on the actual content within an AutoText entry. I once "heard" that it was something like 256 and that AutoCorrect "replace with" should be used for an entry exceeding this size. Could someone tell me if there is a restriction and what it is?

The usual reference, Operating parameter limitations and specifications in Word (MSKB 211489) (Word 2002-2003), does not cover this. I suspect that AutoCorrect actually is more limited than AutoText, but I haven't experimented with any long AutoCorrect entries or any AutoTexts longer than a couple of paragraphs.

    Re: AutoText limitation (2000>)

    Hi Kevin:
Although I haven't searched the KB for this, I don't believe that AutoText entries have a limit, other than the file size limitation on templates & files of 32MB (excluding graphics) of files & templates.

With AutoCorrect, unformatted entries (stored in the appropriate *.acl file) are limited to 255 characters. (Try creating one with more characters & a message will pop up telling you this.) Formatted entries (stored in normal.dot) have no such limitation. Again, I suspect they are only limited by the 32MB template size limitation. Of course, I've never tried approaching this limit & think Word would choke before getting there.
    Cheers,

Definitely... I've run into corrupted formatted AutoCorrects, trying to store large ones. Since then I never try anything well below 64 kB... and not sure even that is "safe".
