    Prevent Mapping of Share

Is there a way to prevent individuals from mapping to a "share" folder? The server is a Win2K and part of a domain. In essence users would utilize a web tool to retrieve/save Excel files. Users are granted access to certain files via the web tool.

In theory the web tool is the portal. Excel's macro security set on medium actually displays the path and file name. Thus users have the potential of seeing the location of the files and may consider mapping directly to the share.

Does the web app run under its own account? Can't you just grant that account the permissions required and not share the folder at all?

    Joe,

The Web App runs under it's own account. Unfortunately the local web browser uses the user's account to get to the files. Thus my dilemma.

I tried modifying the "share" permissions and using "security" to resolve my issue but no luck.

    Regards,

    Re: Prevent Mapping of Share

In my efforts to find a resolution to the drive mapping I came across some references to a Novell feature "Security Based Access-Enumeration" which has been incorporated into Windows.

Would this feature really meet my needs? I'm not familiar with it.

    Thanks,
    John

So, are you running client side scripts or applets to access the files?

If the tool is running on the server can you modify it to use the server account as opposed to the user account from the browser?

    Joe,

The web tool is provided by a Vendor. I am checking with them. How would the browser switch to the browser account vs the applet account? Is there some type of setting within the browser?

    Re: Prevent Mapping of Share

If the browser is starting a web app on the server then it depends on what the app has access to. This is why it is important to know the architecture of the application and where which pieces of the code are being executed.
