Speech Recognition (XP)

I recently upgraded from Dragon Naturally Speaking 5 Standard to Version 8 Preferred. It works well in most applications, but I find that while it works on the 'outside' of some chat rooms, it doesn't work within the room itself. My former version worked on the inside of these rooms. Scansoft wants a tech support fee to answer the question, and I find that annoying!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

I find that outrageous !!! How recently did you upgrade ??? If it's within 30 days I'd return Version 8 Preferred and reinstall the old version. Have you attempted to email them and request an answer ?? I'm assuming that they want the fee for phone support (from India, no doubt !!!)

    Hi Doc,

Wasn't even phone . . . email. The truth is that the new one IS much better, and the room thing isn't all that important to me, its just that things go quickly in there and by voice I can keep up with the questions about my 'unique' lifestyle, whereas by fingers . . . I am quickly lost. Perhaps its better that I keep within my bounds, anyway - but thats another story.

I wonder if its something I need to turn on . . . or if its a default thing within the program. FAQ's within the Dragon site fail to address the issue, the help files do likewise. So far, it works in IE and all of the Office applications I routinely run, so its just that little thing . . . and if it didn't make my life so much easier, I'd return it for sure!!

    Peace.

    Hi Patrick,

That's very sad when you have to pay almost $200 for the program and then pay to ask a question about a functionality that should be available to you as it was in a previous version and now is either not available or not working. It might be something you need to turn on in the software, or it might be something to do with the chatroom protocols (but I doubt that). I'm not familiar with Dragon and wouldn't know where to tell you to look for that "switch". You might try contacting the administrator of the chatroom and asking them if there is anything they know about the issue. Is it just one particular chatroom or any chatroom ?? Personally, I don't do chatrooms, instant messaging or play the piano for the same reason you use Dragon. My fingers can't keep up.

I suppose the important thing is that, overall, you are pleased with the program and this little issue isn't worth getting your shorts in a knot over. If I come across anything I feel might be useful I'll pass it along.

    Good find Dave !!!

I guess Patrick will have to reinstall version 5 just for the chat rooms. I'm not laughing at you Brother P. Just at the irony of the situation.

    Hi Dave and Doc . . .

Wow, you guys are good. Upon reflection, its not worth the hassle to re-install v 5 just for that purpose. I'll just stagger away from them, musing about the glitch the programers put in the program . . . and ponder why.

Otherwise, The Lounge has been of great value - and quickly, too - again. Thanks much, guys.
