    indirect (2003)

Can someone please help me to correct a formula.

    The following gathers data correctly:

=INDEX('Documents and SettingsapergunasMy DocumentsMy KPMGMacrosGeneral Macro ExamplesExtracting data from unopened files[Data Source.xls]Sheet1'!$A$1:$Z$50,9,1)

However the following formula returns #ref:

=INDEX(INDIRECT("'Documents and SettingsapergunasMy DocumentsMy KPMGMacrosGeneral Macro ExamplesExtracting data from unopened files[Data Source.xls]"&$C$10&"'!$A$1:$Z$50"),10,1)

Where cell C10 contains the text Sheet1

I have tried various iterations and amendments, with no success.

INDIRECT doesn't work with external references to a closed workbook. The workbook referred to MUST be open.

Laurent Longre's free Morefunc add-in (available from Excel add-ins) contains an INDIRECT.EXT function that does work with references to closed workbooks.

    Hans

Thanks for your response. This looks like a good site to get additional resources from.

I just have one minor problem. When I unzip the down-loaded file I get a warning box that Winzip cannot instal, and I should use winzip checkout instead.

Therefore my question is, do I need to instal the file into a specific directory?

The zip file contains one file: Setup.exe. You can put this wherever you want, the easiest way is by dragging it from the WinZip window into a folder in Windows Explorer (or even to your desktop). You shouldn't open Setup.exe directly from the WinZip window.
Oh, if you have Windows XP and don't have WinZip, just drag Setup.exe out of the .zip to another folder.
