    Save As is messed up

Recently, I've noticed that when I try to do a Save As in apps such as IE or
Firefox or Thunderbird or Acrobat or ..., the display of the files and
    directories is in disorder.

Used to be, I could control the display by choosing list or details from the
drop down menu and the setting would stick. The settings no longer stick.

And, if I right click and ask to arrange by names, the names are sorted in
    reverse order.

I expect that some registry setting has gotten munged.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

In recent weeks, the only software that I recall installing was Norton
    Auntie Virus 2005 on 26 Aug 2005.
I expect that is what screwed things up. Why? I have no idea!

    1. Open the program (IE or Firefox or Thunderbird)
    2. Open SaveAs dialog (from File menu, select Save As)
    3. On the upper toolbar of SaveAs dialog, locate View Menu drop-down list (the last icon from the left)
    4. From View Menu drop-down list, select Details
    5. Now main SaveAs dialog window looks like a table (similar to Excel tables). Clicking on column headers, choose a sorting you prefer: by name, by type, by date etc - ascending or descending.
    6. From View Menu drop-down list, select your preferred view (optional).

I mentioned in my original posting that the settings do not stick for Save As.

What is the "Sort" when you view this folder from Windows Explorer?

You may need to sort it from Windows Explorer and see if that is sticky!

Re: Save As is messed up

Windows Explorer is fine, problem is only with Save As.

The problem occurs in several apps, so I suspect either a registry setting has gotten munged, or some app, such as NAV, is doing some monkey business affecting Save As.

Do not recall when I first noticed the problem, but I did install NAV 2005 on 26 Aug 2005, likely the right time frame.

Do not recall the date I last ran Windows Update, I guess that could also be the culprit.

Did you open the folder with Windows Explorer since this has happened and check to see if in FACT the sort is correct?

Re: Save As is messed up

    yes.

    for example, i have a directory D:vbcode

Using windoze explorer, if i navigate to that directory, files and directories are sorted properly.

however, if i open a file in another directory, say, using notepad, and use Save As, the files and directories in the D:vbcode directory are not sorted correctly.
Save As is definitely using a different sort order (in effect, there appears to be no order) than windoze explorer.

Have you tried turning on Details view in the Save As dialog box (click the little triangular down-arrow on the extreme right of the toolbar). You can then click on a column heading to change the sort order, and then change back to List view again.

Re: Save As is messed up

Resetting Folder options seems to have fixed the problem.

I have not touched folder options in at least a year, so some software must have blown the setting.
I'd have to blame NAV 2005 as that was the only recent software installation (on 26 Aug 2005) and I did not notice the problem until after that date.
