Package and Deploy (VB6-Win98)

I'm about to try to package an installation consisting of
1 x EXE, 2 x DLLs, 8 x Office 2000 templates and 1 x .INI file.
There are also a couple of custom-built OCX controls used in the EXE. I'm considering using the VB6 wizard (or perhaps the VS6 equivalent) for this task. I haven't used either before, having just used my own batch/ script files for the job, so I have several questions.

The main problem is (apart from the client ) that this will be installed on a variety of Windows OS versions (all with Office 2000 though). I will need to place the DLLs in (I guess) the Windows "system" area of each OS, so that the template references to them can be resolved by Office VBA. I will also have to register them. Can either/ both of these wizards arrange to do that for me?

The EXE and INI must both go into a user-selected folder, which contains another specific file, already existing on each candidate computer. The templates should be in a folder of their own, located anywhere the user wants.

What do I need to do with the OCX files?

Is the VB or VS installer better for this task?

thanks

VB and VS use the same packaging wizard, and it stinks, in my personal opinion. However, since I've never tried to use it with VB, only with Access, I can't really say it won't do an adequate job for you. That being said, it is a *stupid* wizard and there is no guarantee of how the installer will behave on the target machines.

Thanks for the rundown Charlotte. The only other one I have here came with VS is called InstallShield for MS VC++. I haven't had cause to use that one - the Project Wizard doesn't seem to support VB anyway. They have a few at work I think. At least one builds MSI installs. Do you know if these are (generally) more flexible, reliable etc?

I didn't know about the one for VC++, but InstallShield and Wise are the two packaging apps that dominate the market and they are both flexible and reliable and much smarter than the VB/VBA wizard. Microsoft itself uses a third party installer.

I just took a quick look at the MSI builder they have at work. Looks very capable, but also appears to have quite a learning curve, which I just don't have the time for at the moment. I may have to rely on my primitive scripting, which does have the advantage that it actually works, if you do it right.
