Using a limited User Account (XP Pro SP2)

    Hello,

I'm still accessing the internet with full administrator privileges. I'd like to set up a limited user account and use that on a daily basis. I tried but had some difficulty using winkey and Dirkey (v2). Has anyone got either of these programs to work using a limited user account. Does anyone have any advice about using a limited user account - do I need to fiddle with permissions settings? I'd hate to forgo using these two programs and I'm sure I'm going to have trouble with other utilities and programs as well. A limited user account seems a good idea in theory but in practise is it practical?

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

PS Is it possible to copy user settings for different programs from an account with full administrative privileges to a limited user account or do I need to set them all up from scratch.

Re: Using a limited User Account (XP Pro SP2)

It is strongly recommended do not use an account which belongs to Administrators group as working account. If your "limited user account" is a member of Users group and this group permissions is not enough for your requirements, assign the account to De###### Users or Power Users group. Of course, you can also create a new group and assign any rights you need to this group. It is better solution than change permissions for groups created by default.

    For more information, see

and many other tutorials. You can find an answer to your question there.

Re: Using a limited User Account (XP Pro SP2)

Thanks for the advice and links. I managed to create a limited user account and make it part of the Power Users Group. I tried to make my own group but I couldn't figure out how to assign rights to the group. Is a Power User Group any safer than an administrator account?

    Thanks again,

    Chris
