    cannot copy sheets (2000 9.0.4402 SR-1)

I occasionally come across a problem, where I cannot copy a sheet.

Dragging + holding down CTRL does nothing (the cross does appear on the sheet being dragged). Let go of the mouse/ ctrl key (in whatever order). Nothing happens.
Similarly Edit> Move or Copy sheet... nothing.

Only way I can solve is to copy the cell contents, and paste into a blank sheet. This is hassle though, as it loses a lot of info. (cells have to be re-sized, page setup again etc.).

I have not come across this problem (yet), but one way to solve it would be to 1) make a copy of the workbook, 2) delete the sheets you don't want, 3) rename the remaining sheet (= your copy) and 4) move/copy it to the original workbook or whatever.
Sorry to be not that original.

    Regards, Teunis

Could this be a file that has originally been used in Excel 97 a lot?

Either way, check in the VBE (ALt-F11) what code names are listed for the worksheets (see screenshot).

If you see some that look like this:
    Sheet1111111111111
or similar, rename them (in the properties window change the property called (Name), making sure you use unique names.

This sounds like it may be one or a combination of:
    A. the WorkBook is protected
    B. The Sheet has had the Enable.Selection property set to xlUnlockedCells only with all or just one cell unlocked; or to xlNoSelection.
    C. The scroll area has been set to "A1" or another single cell.

    Thanks to all replies...

Pieterse was correct to suppose that it was originally a 97 file. His solution worked perfectly.
