    Safe Installations?

Spy Sweeper just identified three files (programs?) that are trying to install themselves into my registry.

    DellSupport
    UinstallDellSupport2.x
    DwlClient

    I have a Dell computer.

Does anyone know what these files are and what I should do about them?

    Thank you.

Do you have a persistent Dell Support application in your system tray? It sounds as though these might be related to an update for that. (I actually stopped it from starting up automatically, as it seemed to present rather inane messages.)

I don't know. Which probably means that I do.

It sounds like I should consider turning it off too. How do I do that? Should I delete the latest updates, if that's what they are?

    Thanks.

I'd check for the submenu illustrated in the attachment. If you see any of those icons in your tray...

    Re: Safe Installations?

All of these files are related to Dell Support alerts. If they are enabled, you will sometimes receive popups with notifications of updates or support features which may be available for your Dell computer. While they are not essential (you can manually go to the Dell site and check for updates for your particular model), they are not harmful and it's up to you whether or not you want them running at startup. Spy Sweeper is simply notifying you that these 3 programs are trying to write entries into the registry.

I couldn't find any of those icons in the tray. Which doesn't necessarily mean they aren't there.

I clicked on Dell Support in the Help section of the Start button. Is there another way to get to area you mean?

    Thanks.

    I use the "classic" menu style, so it's Start>Programs>Dell Support. If you use the Windows XP style, I guess it's Start>All Programs, and then I don't remember. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Jefferson,

My Dell machine at work does not have the Settings option for Dell Support. I have yet to find a way to turn the blasted thing off, although I would love to do so.

    Charlotte,

Have you tried using Sysinternals Freeware - Autoruns? It gives the most complete set of startup locations that I know.
