Breaking news on Excel 12!!!!!!!!!! (Excel 12)

    Hi everyone,

Microsoft has just launched a new blog on the next release of Excel:
Microsoft Excel, A discussion of what's new in Excel 12.

And the very first article announces something I have been waiting for for ages:

More columns (16,384) and rows (1,048,576)!

    (Wow, that makes 17,179,869,184 cells!)

At last, more columns and rows.

I think the new user interface will cause quite a bit of discussion, it may take a while to adapt to using it.

No idea Legare. I guess so. But it isn't all that bad. I have two versions installed with it, one on two machines. Never has a problem with those.

It's not that bad, until you hit the inevitable bug and it refuses to let you access your data, or worse your entire system. Don't forget, these are the same people that coded Windows security.

Gee..Just think of the size of the file you can create. One hopes that MS starts using better file compression techniques.

From what I've understood, the default file format in Office 12 will be a zipped XML format.

Of course, you shouldn't fill ALL rows and ALL columns, but having more than the old limit can be very handy.

Tx for those links Jan and Tony. Some great insight into what I'll be dealing with in the near future. That interface is looking great! Amazing improvements!!!

    That's not a spreadsheet - that's a database! <img src=/S/cranky.gif border=0 alt=cranky width=18 height=25> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Dunno, tables in Access and in SQL Server have only 256 columns - if you need more, it's time to review your data design!

Just as a matter of interest is there a reason for 16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows? This sounds like an extraordinary amount when (from my experience) users hardly use a full worksheet width or length now as it is. OK I can understand the rows but columns <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15>

I also remember Hans mentioned to me some time back that Access will only export (if memory serves me right) 16,834 records at a time, so will Access 12 increase this export amount?

For columns, many have wanted to use a column for day in the year which requires at least 366 columns and generally at least one more for a "label".

Personally, I think rearranging the data and putting the dates into the rows makes it easier to work with, since you get the builtin filtering and pivot tables...

Re: Breaking news on Excel 12!!!!!!!!!! (Excel 12)

You can make pretty big files currently:

I put the number "1" in every cell of a single sheet workbook and the file size was almost 100 MB.

I put the letter "A" in every cell of a single sheet workbook and the file size was over 225 MB.

If it would stay the same, the 3 order of magnitude (1024) increase in file capacity would require huge hard drives just to hold these large files. It also would require huge amounts of RAM to hold the large files in memory since they are all loaded into memory at one time.

I'm happy -I've been wrestling with breaking data across sheets...
