DVD burner works but won't read!

Alright, I currently have as my CD/DVD burner, a SONY DVD RW DRU-710A. It was working perfectly fine the other night and now it is just outa control. First off let me just say that I have tried the troubleshooting for it. The problem I'm having is that my DVD does work... the light's on, it opens and closes... but unfortunately it just won't read ANY cd i put in there. When I try to burn a CD, even with a new cd it will say CD drive is empty. If i try to play a music CD it will say the CD drive is empty. I'm not sure what more I can say about this I'm just wondering if there is any easy solution for a problem such as this.

For starters - have you checked the computer/system properties/device manager(WinXP) to make sure the drive doesn't have a problem there and that it's property dialogue box says it is "working properly"?

Have you tried shutting down, opening the box, & checking the cables?

skitterbug: Yes, it says the device works fine, there are NO errors, troubleshooting did nothing. I tried rolling back drivers (there were no previous ones) and I tried updating them (there were no new ones).

joe: To be honest I'm not really sure how the cables work inside the box. BUT if the drive opens and closes wouldn't that mean it's plugged in at least?

It means that the power cable is plugged in but not necessarily the signal cable. If you are not comfortable opening the PC do you have a friend or neighbor who'd be willing to check it out?

Re: DVD burner works but won't read!

I wonder if it would be worth running a DVD cleaning disk through it to make sure the optical reader isn't "dirty"? I also wonder if it didn't just "break"? Is it still under warranty perhaps? It seems odd that it "just quit working" without a reason? Any electrical outages that might have affected it by chance?

I guess if it were me, I'd hunt for the drivers like you did and reinstall them even if the device says they are up to date. Next, I'd try cleaning it. If that didn't help, I'd start in safe mode and check the device manager to be sure that everything was okay there and nothing was being hidden from me since sometimes there may be two instances of a device showing up while in safe mode but not while starting "regularly". And if all of this didn't work, I would be into the case checking out the cables. If that didn't help, I would unstall it from my system and then shut down the computer, and disconnect the thing. Reboot my computer. Then I would shut it down again, attach the cables and let the computer find my drive and install it for me. And if it still didn't work, I would probably consider a new one! That's what I would do. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>
