Hi Barry, Welcome to the Lounge

I have never used it but you could try PDF Online

If you do try it tell us what you think of it as it may be of use to others.

    Re: Free pdf writer software

Thanks Stuart. I found myself trying out CutePDF Writer which seemed to work nicely with my old Word 97 in that it produced accurate copies and the file sized seemed good. However, I noticed that if I opened up a PDF created by CutePDF Writer with Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 and tried to copy some text and paste it back into word I got a garbled mess. Has anyone else had experience of this? Do any free PDF creators create text that can be copied as text?

    Best wishes,

    Chris (Hunt)

Open Office available free at http://www.openoffice.org/ can open Word documents and can export them as PDFs. I find I can select the text in those PDFs and paste it back into Word. Is that any good?

    Hi Chris

I have never used CutePDF but the following is based on other PDF writers so hopefully is similar in CutePDF. This problem is due to how TrueType fonts are handled by the PDF writer.

In the CutePDF printer preferences dialog click the Advanced button. Look for the TrueType font option and set it to "Download as softfont"

If this does not work hopefully somebody who uses CutePDF will be able to help.

Thanks Tony, I tried this setting but it didn't make any difference. There are quite a few other settings, perhaps there is some combination that works!

Thanks Ian, I downloaded Open Office a while back and have been meaning to try it out. A solution that worked with Word is preferable, however, as I have a collection of Macros for teachers which I guess won't be compatible with Open Office.

    Best wishes,

    Chris

Yes, though what I imagined you might be able to do is produce your document in Word - which would mean you could use your macros etc - then just open the finished document with Open Office for the purpose of exporting it as a PDF.

Doh! Why didn't I think of that! I only thought of switching to Open Office not using both. If I can't find a PDF writer that works with Word 97 I will definitely do as you suggest. Thanks Ian.

    Best wishes,

    Chris

You may find that the newest version of Open Office (the version 2 beta) handles MS Office documents better than the old one - I'm not sure which it was you had already downloaded.

The best PDF creation tools I have used come from the creators of the format - Adobe Acrobat

... but though my work can afford to buy it for me, I have no hope of affording it at home!

I use the free PDFCreate. I located it from Komando.com, sharewares. Works with Visio, Office 2000, Office XP so far. Small and Quick.
